The Hard Middle No One Talks About

Every meaningful goal has a hard middle — the space where excitement fades, results feel slow, and doubt starts getting loud. Whether you’re building a business, changing careers, improving your health, healing a relationship, or reinventing your life in midlife, this is often the moment when most people think about quitting. But the hard middle is also where mindset transformation, resilience, and real personal growth begin.

When I started on my entrepreneurial journey, I had no idea how hard it would be.

And honestly, I’m grateful for that.

Because if I had known then what I know now, I may have never started.

Whether you’re building a business, trying to lose weight, changing careers, healing a relationship, or working toward any meaningful goal… there comes a point where almost all of us think about quitting.

You know the part I’m talking about.

In the beginning, you’re excited. Hopeful. Energized by the possibility of what could be.

So you begin.
You make a plan.
You take action.
And for a little while, it feels good.

But then something shifts.

Things slow down.
Results stall.
The excitement fades.
And what once felt inspiring starts to feel hard, repetitive, or uncertain.

That’s usually when doubt starts creeping in.

You begin wondering why you started in the first place.
You question whether it was realistic.
You wonder if maybe it was just a pipe dream after all.

And that’s when people start thinking about quitting.

Have you ever been there?

I sure have.

My husband told me there’s actually a phrase for this in the entrepreneurial world: the valley of death.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of the name… but I understood exactly what he meant.

It’s that space between starting something and seeing meaningful results.

The place where motivation drops.
Progress feels invisible.
And most people give up.

Not because they’re incapable.
But because it stops feeling worth it.

And this doesn’t just happen in business.

It happens with health goals.
With personal growth.
With healing.
With reinvention.
With becoming the person you know you want to be.

This is the part where the excitement is gone… but the breakthrough hasn’t arrived yet.

And because we live in a world that rewards quick results, it’s easy to assume that if we can’t see change yet, nothing is happening.

But that’s not true.

So often, change is happening internally before it ever becomes visible externally.

Your identity is shifting.
Your resilience is building.
Your habits are forming.
Your capacity is growing.

It may not look dramatic from the outside.
But that doesn’t mean it isn’t working.

It may simply mean you’re in the middle.

And the middle is where most people quit.

Surround Yourself with People Who Believe in You

This is also the moment when support matters most.

Because when you’re tired, discouraged, or doubting yourself, it helps to have people around you who can remind you of who you are.

For me, that’s my husband, my close friends, and the women inside Beyond by Emerge Positive™.

These are the people who remind you of your passion.
Your vision.
Your capabilities.
Your why.

They help you remember that the struggle doesn’t mean you’re failing.

It means you’re in process.

And the truth is, almost every meaningful goal has a stretch like this.

A hard middle.
A testing ground.
A place where you have to decide whether you’re going to stop… or keep walking.

Because on the other side of frustration, fear, and doubt… is often the very progress you’ve been hoping for.

But you won’t know that if you turn around too soon.

The Best way Through

So if you’re in that space right now—doubting, questioning, wondering if you’ve temporarily lost your mind—hear me on this:

Take action.

Do something. Anything that moves you forward.

It could be an email.
A phone call.
A short walk.
A brainstorming session.
A healthy meal.
A conversation.
A prayer.
A page in your journal.

Anything that creates forward movement.

Freezing up for a moment is human.

But don’t stay there too long.

Action is what gets you through fear.
It is almost always the way through.

And as you keep taking those small steps, remind yourself:

You are moving beyond the point where most people stop.

You are choosing to believe in yourself.
You are choosing not to give up.
You are choosing to stay in the process long enough to see what happens next.

And if you keep going, step by step, you will get there.

Beyond by Emerge Positive™

One of the main focuses inside Beyond by Emerge Positive™ is helping women design their next decade with confidence and intention.

The masterclasses give you tools, education, and perspective.
But the community is what helps keep you going.

Especially when you hit the hard middle.
Especially when doubt gets loud.

Inside Beyond, you get support.
You feel heard.
You realize you’re not the only one feeling this way.
And you get accountability.

And that matters.

Because sometimes, knowing someone else is waiting for you helps you rise.

I know it does for me.

If this resonates with you, I’d love for you to join us for our May Masterclass on May 12 at 7:30 PM ET | 4:30PM PT.

Final Thought

Our life journey is not meant to be easy.

It is meant to stretch us.
Challenge us.
Teach us.

That’s how we learn more about who we are.
And that’s how we grow into more of who we’re meant to become.

So if you’re in the hard middle right now, don’t stop.

Take the afternoon off if you need to.
Rest. Reset. Breathe.

And then tomorrow, take one small step forward.

You will feel better when you do.

Keep your why in front of you.
And step by step, you will arrive.

You Can Emerge Positive.

Positively,

Deanne
