It’s Not Too Late: A 7-Minute Exercise to Reset Your Next Chapter

If you’re in midlife, you’ve probably had this moment:
You see an old photo and think, “Wait… when did THAT happen?

For me, it didn’t start with a dramatic moment.
It started with… laundry.

I was in my bedroom folding clothes on the bed when my eyes landed on photos from my husband and me on our wedding cruise.
We looked young. Happy. With endless possibilities.

When was that again?

Seven years ago.

That felt impossible.

And I went on with my day… until the next moment hit me.

The Midlife Moment That Wakes You Up

I came across a photo of myself from 18 years ago.
I remember not liking it at the time.

But looking at it now?
I thought: Wait… I look pretty good.

And it got me thinking…

One day in the future, I’m going to look back at a photo of me today and think the exact same thing:
I don’t look so bad.

So why am I beating myself up right now?
Why am I wasting energy doubting myself, criticizing myself, or shrinking who I am?

The truth is: the time is going to pass either way.
And I still have so much I want to do.

Sometimes that realization makes my mind go into overdrive… because I know the only thing in my way is me.

So I asked myself a question that changed the whole tone of my day:

What would my future 80-year-old self say to me now?
Would there be regrets?
Joy?
Pride?
A few loving course corrections?

So I tried something simple.

I wrote a letter to myself… from my 80-year-old self.

And it was shocking, affirming, supportive…

…and yes, it lit a fire under my ass.

Want to try it?

A Letter From Your 80-Year-Old Self

Here’s what mine sounded like:

Dear me,
Stop waiting to feel “ready” before you live.
You’re going to wish you had been kinder to yourself—starting now.
You were never behind. You were never “too much.”
You were learning.

Call the friend. Take the walk. Book the appointment.
Wear the damn outfit.
Say what you mean.
Stop negotiating with the things that drain you.

And please hear me on this:
the best years weren’t the busiest ones…
they were the ones where you were present.

I’m proud of you for choosing yourself sooner than I did.

Love,
Your wise 80-year-old self

The 7-minute exercise

Set a timer for 7 minutes. No overthinking. No editing.

  1. Start with: “Dear me…”
  2. Write as your 80-year-old self speaking to you today.
  3. Include these 2 things (just one line each is enough):
    • One truth you want to remember
    • One regret to release (something to stop wasting time on)
  4. End with: “Start here: ______.”

That’s it. Seven minutes. Let it be messy. Let it be honest.

5 Quick Reflections to Turn Insight Into Action

After you write your letter, answer these:

  1. What line hit you the hardest—and why?
  2. What am I spending too much time on that won’t matter in 10 years?
  3. What am I postponing that my future self is begging me to start?
  4. What is one boundary my 80-year-old self would want me to set now?
  5. What is the one tiny step I will take in the next 24 hours?

If you write this letter and feel a lump in your throat… you did it right.
