When You Wake Up Feeling Heavy
This morning, I woke up in a really negative headspace.
Not just tired.
Not just stressed.
Heavy.
Almost a sadness I could feel in my body before my feet even hit the floor.
Thoughts started flooding in:
My life isn’t where I want it to be.
What if it never comes together?
What if I’ve fallen short?
Should I be doing something completely different with my life?
And the hard part is… when you wake up feeling this way, it can feel incredibly real.
Like your mind has suddenly become a courtroom presenting evidence against your happiness.
I know I’m not alone in this.
So many people wake up carrying anxiety, disappointment, overwhelm, loneliness, uncertainty, or that quiet feeling that life should somehow feel “better” by now.
And if we’re not careful, we let that emotional state become the lens through which we experience the entire day.
We become shorter with people.
Less hopeful.
Less patient.
Less motivated.
More reactive.
More defeated.
You Don’t Have to Stay There
But over the years, I’ve learned something important:
You do not have to stay in the emotional state you woke up in.
That doesn’t mean pretending.
It doesn’t mean toxic positivity.
And it doesn’t mean ignoring real problems.
It simply means recognizing that your mind and body often need support before they can shift.
The Power of a Pattern Interrupt
So instead of laying there feeding the spiral this morning, I got up.
I brushed my teeth.
Rinsed my face.
Did a full body stretch while listening to meditation music.
Got dressed.
Made my coffee.
Then I started looking through house listings on Zillow — something that strangely always sparks creativity and possibility in me. I love seeing the decor, imagining new spaces, thinking about what could be next.
And little by little…
I felt myself coming back.
Not magically.
Not instantly.
But enough.
Enough to interrupt the emotional momentum.
Enough to remember that feelings are temporary.
Enough to realize that sometimes what we need most is not a complete life overhaul…
but a pattern interrupt.
A reset.
Small Habits Help Us Regain Traction
And honestly, this is why small habits matter so much.
Not because they make life perfect.
But because they help us regain traction when our mind starts pulling us somewhere dark.
Sometimes the shift starts with:
A walk outside.
Music.
Prayer.
Stretching.
A shower.
Journaling.
Reading something inspiring.
Cleaning a room.
Calling someone safe.
Listening to a podcast that reminds you who you are.
Tiny shifts.
Tiny actions.
Tiny interruptions to the spiral.
Your Feelings Are Real, But They Are Not Always the Full Truth
And maybe the most important reminder of all is this:
Just because you feel hopeless in a moment does not mean your life is hopeless.
Feelings are real.
But they are not always permanent truth.
Sometimes you simply need to help yourself reconnect to possibility again.
And if you woke up heavy recently…please know you’re not failing at life.
You’re human.
The goal is not to never have hard mornings.
The goal is learning how to move yourself through them with more awareness, compassion, and intention.
One small shift at a time.
